Thomas's work is consistently labelled eccentric, and this in part is inevitably due to the conservatism of some critics and is probably due to the rich and unusual sound sources and tools he uses, and the structures in which they are placed. David Stubbs in the New Musical Express, called Thomas's work 'a vital new musique concrete for the 21st Century'. Thomas nonetheless refers to himself as a 'post-acousmatic' artist.
